The Utility Regulator has launched a survey to gather information from electricity and gas consumers who have experienced debt first hand. The findings will input into a code of practice for the utility companies on helping their customers avoid and mange their way out of debt.
Views are being sought from consumers who are currently, or have ever struggled to pay an electricity or gas bill, or are paying off a debt to their supplier. The survey also aims to identify ways to help consumers avoid getting into debt with their electricity or gas supplier, and to help consumers who may be in arrears.
Sarah Brady, Head of Social and Environmental at the Utility Regulator said:
“The Utility Regulator is committed to protecting the interests of electricity, gas and water consumers in Northern Ireland. We want to ensure that the gas, electricity and water industries are developed in a financially, socially and environmentally sustainable way.
“An important development of this has been the publication of our Social Action Plan, which works to address the protection of vulnerable consumers. Within the Plan, we have committed to develop and implement a debt management code of practice.”
