Wholesale electricity market prices
The Single Electricity Market is the wholesale market on the island of Ireland where electricity generators and suppliers trade the power used by homes and businesses across the island of Ireland. The price from the SEM makes up just over 50% of your final bill.
Our Market Monitoring Unit monitors the SEM, keeping track of prices and all the elements that come together to make up that price. This includes wholesale fuel costs such as gas which is the predominant fuel used in conventional thermal electricity generation, and used to heat may homes with natural gas across NI. We publish weekly and monthly reports on market performance and keep an eye on market behaviour, acting where necessary.
