UR publishes information note on review of effectiveness of competition in NI energy retail markets

Protecting consumers is at the heart of the Utility Regulator’s (UR) role and ensuring there is sufficient competition in the Northern Ireland (NI) energy market is an integral part of our statutory duty.

Today we publish an information note on our review of the effectiveness of competition in the NI energy retail markets.  The purpose of this review is to establish the basis for assessing the current state of competition and, in turn, highlight areas that may require intervention, further guidance for market participants, monitoring frameworks or relaxation/ removal of regulations and retail price controls as the sector opens up.  Through collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data, we will provide the context for understanding the sentiment of different consumer groups and how these are encouraging or preventing wider market effectiveness.

The UR would like to invite stakeholders to a briefing event which will be held at the UR offices from 11.00 to 13.00 on Wednesday 6th August. This will be an opportunity for us to provide more detail on how we will conduct the review and answer stakeholder questions.

If you would like to register your interest in attending this event, please contact Robert Stewart robert.stewart@uregni.gov.uk by Thursday 31st July.
