NEMO designation announced for Northern Ireland

The Utility Regulator publishes its decision to designate SONI Ltd as the Nominated Electricity Market Operator (NEMO) for Northern Ireland under Article 4 of the Capacity Allocation and Congestion Management (CACM) Guidelines, which entered into force on 14 August 2015. As the NEMO for Northern Ireland, SONI will operate the I-SEM electricity market when it comes into place.

This decision follows publication of invitations for applications for NEMO designation in both Ireland (by the CER) and Northern Ireland.  One application was received from SONI Ltd for designation in Northern Ireland and from EirGrid plc for designation in Ireland, with both companies intending to work together to jointly deliver NEMO services for the I-SEM.  The application was assessed on a cooperative basis by the Utility Regulator and the CER against the NEMO designation criteria stated in Article 6 of CACM. The CER have published their decision to designate EirGrid plc in Ireland separately.
