The Utility Regulator today welcomes the announcement that the Crown Estate has awarded development rights for three offshore renewable energy sites in Northern Ireland coastal waters. The development of these offshore renewable energy sites will contribute to the achievement of Northern Ireland’s 40% renewable energy production target by 2020.
Shane Lynch, Utility Regulator Chief Executive, said:
“Consistent with our statutory duties, the Utility Regulator will play its role in helping to achieve Northern Ireland’s renewable electricity target.
“Later this year we intend to issue a consultation on the connection arrangements for offshore renewables. These are the first offshore renewable projects in Northern Ireland waters, and therefore new connections arrangements will need to be put in place. The consultation will focus primarily on the technical areas of connection to ensure the appropriate regulatory system is in place.”
Further information on the announcement is available on the Crown Estate and DETI websites.
